Message From The Chairman

Welcome to Chirality 2007

On behalf of the Scientific and Organizing Committees, I have the pleasure of welcoming you to the 19th International Symposium on Chirality (Chirality 2007) in beautiful San Diego, California. You will find the scientific program of lecture and poster presentations that we’ve put together along with the exhibition are innovative and intellectually stimulating.

This year the conference  opens on Sunday with the Chirality Medal Award Lecture from Professor Nina Berova, Columbia University, New York, the first woman recipient of the Chirality Medal Award. Professor Berova serves as editor of the journal, Chirality, and is one of the foremost leaders in the field of organic stereochemistry and chiroptical spectroscopy. A special reception will follow the lecture, sponsored by Jasco.

The conference is in full swing Monday beginning with a plenary lecture by 2001 Nobel Laureate, K. Barry Sharpless, followed by an exciting program of oral and poster presentations. This year’s conference is well represented geographically with scientists from 24 countries with 26 of the oral presentations from the USA, 16 from Europe, 14 from Asia, and 3 from Latin America and the Middle East containing state-of-the-art technology and research in a wide range of topics in the field of chirality. Once again, the meeting will no doubt provide a great opportunity for us to exchange our latest results and experiences in the field and in academics.

In an effort to increase opportunities for continuing education and training, the Symposium offers two short courses on the Sunday preceding the meeting. In addition, there are seven free vendor seminars being held on Monday and Tuesday. Please see the list of free vendor seminars contained in the program and be sure to register early to attend.

We invite you to join the Chirality 2007 Permanent International Scientific Committee on Tuesday for the Symposium Dinner Cruise. Dine with us on the Spirit of San Diego while taking in the scenic view of San Diego’s magnificent skyline. If you have not yet purchased your dinner ticket, please do so at the Symposium Registration Desk.

We also encourage you to submit a manuscript based on your lecture or poster presentation to the journal, Chirality, that will publish the proceedings of the Symposium as a special issue. Please submit your manuscript via the journal’s online submission system, which is accessible at:

For friends and family of conferees, or if you have some free time, the conference venue, the Sheraton Hotel and Marina located on the San Diego Bay, is only a short distance from attractions such as the San Diego Zoo, Gaslamp Quarter and Sea World Park. The hotel concierge will be able to give you guidance.

I’d like to express my deep appreciation to the participants who have been a great help for us to kick off Chirality 2007, and specifically to the members of the Permanent International Scientific Committee and Advisory Board. I hope you have a rewarding scientific meeting and pleasant stay in San Diego, California.
